A pioneering woman beddings in the Amazon, Peru
In 2017, when the first lady was visiting Peru, she decided to have her first experience of the Amazon rainforest, camping with indigenous people.
“I was like, this is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I was not prepared to go camping in the rainforest,” she said.
“It was a very big adventure.”
The trip was a life-changing experience for her and the young lady she was camping with, who has since gone on to become a global advocate for indigenous peoples.
“This trip gave me the courage to start taking action for indigenous people around the world,” she wrote on her blog.
“The journey I took, is something that has always resonated with me.
It has always inspired me to do what I do.
I am always looking for new and creative ways to make a difference in peoples lives.”
As part of the trip, she was able to witness a great deal of violence against the Amazon.
“We were not expecting to see this kind of violence, but the Amazon is one of the most biologically diverse and culturally rich places on Earth,” she told the ABC.
“So, the fact that we were able to see the violence that is happening there, really was something to look forward to.”
The experience has led the US First Lady to be an advocate for the rights of indigenous people in the US, and in the next two years, she plans to visit Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.
In the future, she wants to explore other areas of the world, including the Amazon and Antarctica.
“If there’s any region that I could go, and that I would like to explore, I would be very much looking forward to it,” she added.
In 2017 she also gave a TED Talk, in which she discussed the importance of respecting people’s cultures and traditions.
“You can’t just assume everyone is the same, you can’t be so rigid and you can only assume what you want to believe and what you’re comfortable with,” she explained.
“For example, there’s been a lot of discussions around the internet, or people have been saying that they don’t want to date people who are Indigenous.
But the reality is, it is the most popular way that people date, and the most common way they date is Indigenous.
So that’s what I would really love to do with the first Lady.”
